Hybrid DDP24DF For
This company is a facility post production house, where they want to be able to accept any format including compressed 4K formats.
They have 25 users, 400TB.
The company uses Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Edius, Final Cut Pro and Black Magic Resolve.
With the SSD8 pack of 4TB as Project Cache they are able to offer this. Slower and older projects come from the sixteen spindles.
DDP uses and has been using 24/7 enterprise SAS hard disks. All clients are connected via 10GbE optical transceivers.
The company – as so many DDP users – started seven years back with an all spindles DDP48D.
But the times they are a-changing.
Due to the way SSDs are implemented in A/V FS as Project Cache, plus the increase of capacities of both SSD and hard disks, a year back the customer decided to invest in a hybrid DDP24DF. This as a replacement of the DDP48D after 7 years of service.
The DDP24EX is to be connected to this via a SAS cable. When that is done it is easiest to make a remote connection with Ardis Technologies and send an Anydesk invite.
The Ardis office then adds the additional capacity to the dongle and adds the storage array to A/V FS.
The operation can be done in an hour and requires only down time because the EX card must be installed. And also important to know, nothing changes in the directory tree. So for the users nothing changes.
Not every competitor is able to extend their support beyond the regular five years. The customer is now considering to extend their spindle capacity by investing in an EX card and a DDP24EX. The EX card will be installed then in the DDP24DF.
The added capacity can be managed in the quota page again.
DDPs are modular and empty carriers can be filled with storage, additional storage arrays can be added and DDPs can be clustered.
This can happen any time during the DDP life time.
Everybody happy starting 2026!
